A Preliminary Discussion on Bogu Pattern of Porcelain

Among all porcelain patterns, the bogu pattern has been used since its emergence in the late Ming Dynasty and widely favored to this day. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the definition, origin, developments, and early content and forms of bogu pattern. Additionally, the article refutes the viewpoint that bogu pattern of porcelain was derived from the Xuanhe Catalogue of Antiquities of the Northern Song Dynasty; instead, it attributes its origin to the paintings of antiquities appreciation prevalent in the mid and late Ming Dynasty, as well as the letter sheets and prints issued in large quantities in the late Ming Dynasty. Based on findings from archaeological discoveries, the paper suggests that the so-called bogu pattern of porcelain prior to the late Ming Dynasty is consistent with Qing Gong paintings of the Song Dynasty in both content and form. By shedding light on the true background and origin of bogu pattern of porcelain, this paper aims to provide a reference for the research and development of porcelain patterns in the modern times.
